Sheela Jina

I live in Harpenden and I am a parent of two very keen chess players that have both represented Hertfordshire and England in International tournaments.

Both my children (my son aged 12, and my daughter aged 11) started playing chess at around the age of 6.  They learnt the basics at home and then joined Harpenden Junior Chess Club set up and run by Jon Freeman. Unfortunately the club stopped running last year.  For the last two years they have been coached by Lorin.

Given the right encouragement and coaching, children can gained many different skills by learning to play chess; it improves strategic thinking, problem solving, and boosts self-esteem.

My husband, also enjoys playing chess, and for the past three years has been involved with Hertfordshire Schools Chess Association.  This year he managed the Hertfordshire U11 Girls team, and the Hertfordshire U18 Team.  In June 2012, the U18 team played in the U18 National County Championships at Eton College and came first, beating 14 other counties.  Many of those in Hertfordshire U18 team are coached by Lorin D’Costa

Both Lorin D’Costa and Sheela Jina are enhanced CRB checked and approved
